Rowan University Major in Writing Arts

Sanford Tweedie

A document that has been important our program is our self-study, written by faculty in the then-named Department of Composition and Rhetoric, which was followed by a site visit in April 2004 by Council of Writing Program Administrators’ Consultant/Evaluator Service members Joan Mullin and William Condon. In one section of their report, they provided an evaluation of the major that motivated us to create what we called the Disciplinary Committee. This group met for over two years, sometimes weekly. The group created the major’s nine core values and redesigned the curriculum, including both an introductory and capstone course, though these ended up looking quite different from the models suggested by Mullin and Condon.
